Joel Calhoun Porter, 85, died in his sleep the morning of December 26, 2004 at Clairemont Oaks Apartments in Decatur. Born in Atlanta, his parents were Joel C. and Ellen Lyons Porter. He is survived by a brother, Robert L. Porter; two nephews, Ted and Kent Porter; three great nieces; and one great nephew. Joel also has three first cousins in Social Circle, Elizabeth and Fred Wiley and Dorothy Parker. He graduated from the Georgia Military Academy in College Park in 1937 and enlisted in the U. S. Navy shortly after Pearl Harbor. He worked for many years with the Veterans Administration in Atlanta. He knew the Lord Jesus Christ as his personal Savior and faithfully attended the North Atlanta Bible Chapel for 35 years where he had many opportunities to serve the Lord. He prepared the emblems for the Lord's Supper every week for many years. He was a highly regarded and very dependable in all he did. Mr. Austin Meadows will officiate at the funeral which will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at North Atlanta Bible Chapel, 1475 North Druid Hills Rd. Burial will follow at Crest Lawn Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at A. S. Turner & Sons, Decatur, GA.
