John Bradford (“Brad”) Gardner, 88, passed away on Tuesday, January 27. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Olive Gardner, and his wife of fifty years, Helen Quinn Gardner, of Dorchester, Massachusetts.
Brad was a sergeant in the Army Air Corps during World War II. He earned an undergraduate degree from Boston University and, later, two masters degrees. Helen and Brad moved to Ft. Lauderdale, Florida in 1954 with their son, Larry, and Brad’s mother. Brad was a teacher, guidance counselor, and head of guidance in the Broward County School System for twenty-five years. He served in the early 1960’s as head of the Civil Defense training team, during the Cuban missile crisis. Brad was very involved in the Sailboat Bend Civic Association in Ft. Lauderdale. He moved to Decatur, Georgia in 2005, to be closer to his son’s family. Brad is survived by his son, Larry, his daughter-in-law, Marianne, and granddaughters, Whitney Caroline Gardner of Atlanta and Laura Elizabeth Gardner of New York City. There will be a service for Brad at 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, February 4, in the activity center of the Regency House, 341 Winn Way, Decatur, GA, 30033.
