John Carl (Jack) Ammons, Jr., M.D.

John Carl ("Jack") Ammons, Jr., M.D. of Atlanta passed away on Saturday, August 20th at the
age of 79. Dr. Ammons was born on April 6, 1932 in Charlotte, N.C. to John and Ann Ammons. His family later moved to Jacksonville, Florida where he attended Robert E. Lee High School. He was a graduate of Emory University and Emory University School of Medicine, class of 1957. He did his internship and neurology residency at Grady Memorial Hospital from 1957 to 1959 before going on to teach. He was an assistant instructor of Neuroanatomy at
Emory University from 1961 to 1963, an Instructor of Anatomy at Emory University in 1967, and Associate Professor of Neurology at Emory University School of Medicine in 1969.Dr. Ammons devoted most of his career to the VA Medical Center in Atlanta where he worked as a neurologist from 1965 to 1995. After retiring as Chief of Neurology, he continued to work
on part-time basis to continue the work he started in several specialized clinics. Dr. Ammons was a member of the Fulton County Medical Society, the American Academy of Neurology, and the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology and is credited with numerous publications in the field of neurology. He served two years in the United States Navy and 30 years in the United States Naval Reserves, retiring with the rank of Captain. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Ann Ammons, his first wife Ellen Smith Ammons, and a son .Eric Morgan Ammons. He is survived by his wife of 21 years, Mary Helen Ammons, son Christopher
Ammons, daughter Lauren Huskey, stepson David Aucsmith and his wife Shana, stepdaughter Linda Pitts and her husband Tiger, stepdaughter Marty Smith, and 4 grandchildren: Jessica Huskey, Skylar Ammons, Madeline Aucsmith, and Brian Aucsmith. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, August 25, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. at A.S. Turner & Sons located at 2773 North Decatur Road, Decatur, GA 30033. Visitation begins at 1:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to Hospice Atlanta, 1244 Park Vista Drive NE, Atlanta, GA 30319.
