John Carl Vining

John Carl Vining, 94, of Woodstock, Ga, previously of Decatur, GA died on Friday December 2, 2011. He was born on July 9, 1917 to John Chester and Annie Wicks Vining in Atlanta, GA. He graduated from Commercial High School in 1937 and went to work as a civil service clerk until the outbreak of WWII. In March of 1942 he enlisted in the Army Air Corps and served as a crew chief with the Airborne Troop Carrier Command. Mr. Vining attained the rank of Staff Sergeant and participated in numerous campaigns including the Normandy Invasion and the Battle of the Bulge. After the war he received his law degree from Woodrow Wilson School of Law and began a 37 year career with the Corps of Engineers. Upon retirement from the Corps he began a second career with the Veterans Administration where he worked until he was 88. He was a charter member of Clairmont Hills Baptist Church in Decatur for 54 years and was a deacon and a member of the choir. He was member of Civitan and coached youth baseball for many years. Mr. Vining was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 62 years, Clara Pugh Vining; his parents, Annie and John Chester Vining; sister, Kathleen Vining Reich and husband, Carl. He is survived by his brother, Rummel and Mabel (deceased) Vining of Loganville; Howell Vining and his wife, Annette of Loganville; Gordon Vining and his wife, Becky of Decatur. Also surviving are his daughter and son in law, Susan Vining Bell and Gordon of Raleigh, NC; son and daughter in law, John & Nancy Vining of Woodstock, GA; Grandchildren, Julia Bell Young and her husband, Johnny of Raleigh, NC; Dan Bell and his wife, Jennifer of Fuquay-Varina, NC; Leah Vining and Dustin Vining of Woodstock, GA; great-grandchildren Caleb Bell of Louisburg and Alyssa Bell of Fuquay-Varina, NC. Funeral services will be held on Monday Dec. 5 at 11:00 am at Clairmont Hills Baptist Church in Decatur with Rev. Fred Pitts officiating. Interment Floral Hills Memory Gardens. Those desiring may send contributions in Mr. Vining's memory to Clairmont Hills Baptist Church, 1995 Clairmont Rd., Decatur, GA 30033. The family will receive friends from 3:00 to 5:00 pm Sunday at A. S. Turner & Sons.
