John C. Johnston, 80, passed away on Tuesday October 14, 2014 in Atlanta, GA. He was born on November 29, 1933 in Canton, GA to Estelle and Tom Newton Johnston. He was a graduate of West Georgia College in 1954; he served two (2) years in the Army; and he attended the University of Georgia. He went on to graduate from Emory University School of Dentistry in 1961. While attending Emory University, he married his wife Tommye, to whom he was married for 56 years. Dr. Johnston started his dental practice in 1961 and later founded Nanston, Inc. in 1978. He was a member of the Georgia Dental Association and the American Dental Society, Northern District Dental Society and the American Academy of Dental Group Practice. He was a long time member of Briarcliff United Methodist Church and served on several committees during those years. He was involved in dental mission trips for many years. John was blessed with four children, three boys and one daughter. He enjoyed many years of coaching football, basketball and baseball. He also enjoyed watching his daughter's activities of dancing, softball and cheerleading. He was a wonderful husband and a loving father. He is survived by his wife, Tommye; three sons, (Chris and his wife Sherry, Steve and Deborah, and Ronnie and his wife Kelley) and one daughter, (Nancy and her husband Kyle Anderson). His fifteen grandchildren include Caylee and her husband, Drew Snelling, Danielle and her husband, John Raymond, Morgan, Brittany and her husband, Kevin Glaser, Zac and his wife, Maggie, Katie, Sidney, Taylor, Montana, Savannah and Christian Johnston; Erica , Leah, J. Austin and Clayton Anderson. His one great-grandchild, Jo Ann Snelling. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews, one sister, Wynelle Grizzle and one sister-n-law, Virginia Whittemore. Funeral Service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 19th at Briarcliff United Methodist Church located at 4105 Briarcliff Rd. NE, Atlanta, GA 30345 with Rev. Wiley Stephens, Rev. Sondra Jones, and Rev. Nanci Hicks officiating. Burial will follow immediately after the service at Floral Hills Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be sent to Briarcliff United Methodist Church. Visitation will be held from 6:00 p.m. -8:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 18th at A. S. Turner and Sons Funeral Home located at 2773 North Decatur Rd., Decatur, GA 30033.
