Mr. Jack Earl Newhard, age 84 of Lilburn, Georgia, died Tuesday, April 22, 2014. He was born April 23, 1929 in Allentown, Pennsylvania to J. Earl Newhard and Grace Strauss. Mr. Newhard was a 1947 graduate of Allentown High School in Allentown, Pennsylvania. He graduated from Cornell University in 1952 with a bachelor's in civil engineering degree and served four years as a line officer in the U. S. Navy. Eloise Joan Williamson, his beloved wife of 54 years, predeceased him in 2010. He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. Mr. Newhard enjoyed a long and successful career as a civil engineer. He was president of APAC-Georgia, Inc., a heavy and highway construction firm. He was a past president of the Georgia Engineering Foundation and the Georgia Society of Professional Engineers, and a former member of the board of directors of the Georgia Highway Contractors Association and the Society of American Military Engineers. In 1984, he was honored as the "Engineer of the Year in Georgia" by the Society of Professional Engineers. Mr. Newhard is survived by his daughters, Cynthia Deakin and her husband Tom, Kathy Whitmer and her husband Bobby, all of Lilburn, GA; and grandchildren, Laura, Michael and Chris Deakin, Johnathan and James Whitmer. Funeral services will be held Saturday, April 26, 2014 at 4:00 p.m. at Oak Grove United Methodist Church with Rev. Louis Miller officiating. Interment will follow at Oak Grove United Methodist Church Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, well-wishers are asked to send contributions to the Emory Winship Cancer Institute. The family will receive friends on Friday, April 25, 2014 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at A. S. Turner and Sons in Decatur.
