John F Campbell, 92, of DeKalb County, passed away on Sunday, May 5, 2013, of natural causes. John Campbell was born July 23, 1920 in Buffalo, NY, but was raised in Atlanta and considered himself a native to the city. He attended Boy's High in the 1930s and then Atlanta Junior College (now GSU) and Georgia Tech before joining the Army. He served with the 99th Infantry Division in WWII at the Battle of the Bulge in late 1944, receiving serious wounds including the loss of a leg. He never let his injuries slow him down and after the war married, worked for Eastern Airlines in Miami, earned a Law degree from the University of Miami, worked for Lockheed in Marietta, built houses for many years in the Atlanta metro area, practiced law, and served as a Recorder's Court and a Magistrate Court judge in DeKalb County. John had wide ranging interests but with a special love of archeology, aviation, and WWII military history. John traveled extensively in North and Central America, usually including archeological sites as part of the itinerary. John was preceded in death by his son, John F. Campbell, Jr. and is survived by his wife of 67 years, Rebecca Freeman Campbell; daughter-in law, Trisha Campbell and granddaughters, Elizabeth Jones, Rebecca Smith and great-grandsons, Owen and Oliver Jones and Ethan and Wyatt Smith; son, Donald Campbell and daughter-in-law, Alice Campbell and granddaughter, Gillam Campbell; son, Thomas Campbell and daughter-in-law, Denise Campbell; son, David Campbell and daughter-in law, Michelle Campbell and granddaughter, Jennifer Campbell. Also surviving are siblings, Pat Campbell and Sister Rebecca Campbell. A memorial service will be held at A.S. Turner and Sons Funeral Home at 2:00 on Saturday May 18, 2013, followed by a reception at the funeral home.
