John Francis Ellenburg

John Francis Ellenburg, born December 2, 1934 in Birmingham, Alabama, went to be with the Lord on July 2, 2018. He moved to Atlanta at the age of 12, where he attended Georgia Military Academy and later graduated from Grady High School in 1952. He then went on to attend the University of Georgia, where he graduated with a degree in business in 1956. While at UGA, he was the president of his fraternity, Phi Delta Theta. It was at UGA that he met his wife, Bernice Moore Ellenburg, and was married to her for 60 years before she passed away in 2016. John had a fulfilling career in the insurance industry, owning Ellenburg and Associates Insurance Agency. Over the years, he won multiple top sales awards and was able to travel the world with his family and friends. He was also on the Young Life staff and was responsible, along with others, for bringing Young Life to the Atlanta area in the 60’s and 70’s. He had a devout Christian faith and was a member of First Alliance Church and Clairmont Presbyterian Church. John was predeceased by his wife, Bernice Ellenburg, and his daughter, Dee Geeting. He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, David and Melissa, grandchildren Josh Geeting (Brittany), Lindsay Gogolin (Zachary), Kimberly Ellenburg (Berkley Stewart, fiancé), Logan Ellenburg, Lacey Ellenburg, great-grandchildren, Skylar Geeting and Jimmie Lee Gogolin, and several nieces and nephews. In addition, he is survived by a multitude of wonderful friends that he considered family. A memorial service is planned for Friday, July 20, 2018 at A. S. Turner and Sons Funeral Home, Decatur. The family will receive friends at 10:30 before the service.
