John J. Lyons Sr. (Jack) passed away March 4, 2010 at Emory University hospital. He was 101 years old. Born on Staten Island, New York, he started working at the local A&P at age 14. From there he started a 43 year career with U.S. Steel in New Jersey, Pittsburgh and Atlanta. He served in the US Army during World War II, leaving New York for Scotland the day after D-Day on the Queen Mary. In Europe he participated in the Battle of the Bulge as an armored command radio operator and was awarded the purple heart. Jack met his wife Carol at U.S. Steel before the war and they were married when he came home. They were leaders in the local Mended Hearts chapter for 23 years where he served as treasurer for several years and they both visited patients at Emory Hospital. He was preceded in death by his wife Carol. He is survived by his sister Mary Foley of Staten Island, NY and his son and daughter-in-law John and Donna Lyons of Alpharetta. Funeral Services will be at 10 o'clock, Monday, March 8, 2010 at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, 2855 Briarcliff Rd., Atlanta, GA 30329. Interment will follow in Floral Hills Memory Gardens, Tucker, GA. The family will receive friends 1-4 PM Sunday, March 7, 2010 at A.S. Turner & Sons.
