John Quinton Bullard, Sr.

John Quinton Bullard, Sr. died on December 14, 2018. He was an Atlanta native and a member of "The Greatest Generation." The second of five children of Ola Blanche Kirk and Kelion Madison Bullard, John was born on Ormond Street in the Grant Park area of Atlanta on June 2, 1922. When he was still quite young, his family moved to the West End area. He attended Peoples Street Elementary, Joe Brown Junior High and Boys' High School. He entered Georgia Tech in 1940 where he received a B.S. degree in 1943 and an M.S. degree in 1947. He helped support the family starting at age 9 delivering groceries and became an award-winning Atlanta Journal newspaper carrier. John also helped support the family by being a pipe fitter helper, machine shop apprentice, and a lifeguard for the City of Atlanta, among other things.

He joined the O.R.C. in 1942,and while at Ga Tech, was drafted as a private in the U.S. Army, serving as a paratrooper during WWII in the Asiatic Pacific arena with the 11th Airborne Division in Luzon, Philippine Islands, and Okinawa, Japan. He was part of General McArthur's honor guard and among the first G.I.'s setting foot in Japan four days before the peace terms were signed, ending WWII. After being discharged in 1946 as a captain, he worked for several mechanical contractors. In 1965 he formed his own company, John Q. Bullard & Associates, a mechanical equipment supplier, retiring from his own company in 1987. He was a member of A.S.M.E., a lifetime member of A.S.P.E. and ASHRAE. During his career he was elected in Atlanta as engineer of the year in industry for ASME and ASHRAE.

John was a member of the Optimists Club, and lived by the Optimists Creed. He was also a 32nd degree Scottish Rite Mason, a member of Yaraab Temple for more than 60 years. He enjoyed being a certified scuba diver, motorcycle rider, a Gideon, a lifetime Georgia Master Gardener, and a long distance runner. He completed several local marathons, the Los Angeles marathon twice, and over 20 Peachtree Road Races.

In 1951 John married Leona Geraldine (Gerry) Rogers, and they were blessed with four wonderful children. Church involvement was a big part of his life and he spent many years as a Sunday school teacher and deacon. One of his favorite mottos was ASAP = always say a prayer.

He is predeceased by his brother, K.M. Bullard; sister, Geraldine Griffin; his first wife of 55 years, Gerry; and son, Mark Eugene. In 2007 John reconnected with and married Jane Graham O'Halloran, whom he had known previously in 1948.

Survivors include his wife, Jane; sisters, Ola Clarke and Gwen Bullard; children, John Bullard, Jr. and his wife, Beckie, Kim Bullard and his wife, Cece, Amy Bullard Bailey and her husband, Donny; stepchildren, Kerrie O'Halloran and his wife, Patty, Tim O'Halloran and his wife, Betty, and Ann O'Halloran; grandchildren: Katy, Madelyn, Meghan and Ian Bullard, Chloe Head, and Mitchell, Kelsey and Bonnie Bailey; great-grandchildren: Winslow Roxburgh and Everett Staab; and as well as several nieces, nephews and extended family.
