John Robert Kubitz, Retired (Army), age 84, of Decatur died on Monday, May 5, 2014. John was a proud US Army veteran having served in the Korea and Vietnam Wars. He also retired for the US Penitentiary Atlanta and had been a hostage in the 1987 uprising at the USP Atlanta. He lived life to the fullest and enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren while watching them grow up into young adults. He was preceded in death by his wife, Maria Kathrina and his daughter, Roberta Roswitha. He is survived by his daughter, Maria Kubitz of Ellenwood; his son and daughter-in-law, George and Cathy Kubitz of Stockbridge; his grandchildren, John, Joseph and Kate Kubitz of Stockbridge; and God Daughter, Brecca Faust of Ft. Wayne, IN. Memorial Mass will be celebrated on May 9 th at 10:00 am in the Day Chapel at St. Thomas More Catholic Church, Decatur. Fr. Dennis Dorner Jr will be officiating. Military honors will be at Melwood Cemetery following the Mass. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in John's memory to Paralyzed Veterans of America ( www.pva.org /site/ ) or Wounded Warrior Project (www.supportwoundedwarriorproject.org
