John Roy Smith

J.R. Smith of Avondale Estates, age 76, passed away on Saturday, June 13, 2015.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Carolyn Fowler Smith, and he was preceded in death by their two sons, Johnny and Jimmy. J.R. is survived by his sister, Jane Peavy (Ron Carter), his brother-in-law, Don Keller, nieces, nephews, and many friends.

J.R. had a long and distinguished career in the stock brokerage business and was a member of Mt. Carmel Christian Church. J.R. was the primary communications link among his 1957 Decatur High School classmates. His spiritual heart was demonstrated each Sunday morning by sending inspirational messages to those classmates. A great love of his was working diligently with the Jack Ballard Church Builders. J.R.'s spiritual nature carried over to the golf course where he played with the Thursday Duffers and the Atlanta Seniors. J.R. was a man of supreme integrity, magnificent talents, a gentle, caring nature, and a sense of humor like no other.

Visitation will be Sunday, June 28, from 4:00 - 8:00 p.m. at A.S. Turner and Sons Funeral Home in Decatur. The memorial service will be Monday, June 29, at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel of A.S. Turner and Sons. A Celebration of Life will be held immediately following the service at the Avondale Community Club.
