John Royall Beavers passed away peacefully Saturday, November 2, 2013, surrounded by his loving family. He was born October 22, 1924, in Wake County, North Carolina, to the late Daisy Olive and George Monroe Beavers, and was the youngest of their 10 children. Like his father and all his older brothers, he attended Wake Forest College. He interrupted his education to serve in the U.S. Army Air Corps from 1942-1946, including thirty one combat missions over Europe in 1944 while with the 44th Bomb Group, 8th Air Force, as a navigator of B-24 Heavy bombers for which he was awarded the Air Medal with Four Oak Leaf Clusters. In 1948 he graduated from North Carolina State College with an engineering degree and practiced fire protection engineering until retirement in 1986. John was predeceased by his parents, all of his brothers and sisters, and his wife of 52 years, Bette Wilson Beavers. He is survived by his daughter, Margaret Winzeler and her husband Billy of Avondale Estates, his son, Dr. R. Maxwell Baber of Oakridge TN, and his grandchildren. Much gratitude is extended to the doctors and staff at Dekalb Medical Center and Gentiva Hospice for the care and loving kindness they provided to the family during John's final days, and also to the staff and his friends at Coventry Place where he lived the past six years. The family will welcome friends Wednesday, November 6, from 6 to 8 pm at the Winzeler home in Avondale Estates. A private memorial service will be held for John at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to the Salvation Army, the American Red Cross or the charity of one's choice.
