John Stowe

August 19, 1952 — February 3, 2009

John Stowe, teacher, linguist, healer and award-winning author, passed away February 3 at the age of 56.  A native of Ambler, Pennsylvania, John lived in Atlanta since 1976, but his network of friends, family, clients, students and colleagues was global.  At the time of his death, John was a lecturer in the Department of Applied Linguistics at Georgia State University and director of its international programs in China and Mexico.  His professional life also included careers as a teacher of biology, practitioner of massage therapy and natural medicine, manufacturer of flower essences and healing oils, and author of several books, including the Lambda Literary Award-winner Gay Spirit Warrior.  In his personal life, John was known by his many friends and loved ones as an inspired chef, accomplished photographer, fearless world traveler, intrepid canoer and lover of nature.  John’s warmth, wisdom and unbridled irreverence will be deeply missed by his life partner of 25 years, Monty Schuth, his mother Marge Stowe, brother James Stowe and sister Carolyn Shaner and their families, mother-in-law Jean Schuth, friends and associates throughout the world.  John taught us, entertained us, took great care of us, and fed our bodies, minds and souls; we bless the countless gifts he left us.  A memorial service and celebration of John’s life will be held at the Friends Meeting House on Howard Ave., Decatur, on Sunday, February 15 at 4:30 p.m.
