John T. Bryant

December 17, 1929 — August 20, 2011

John T Bryant, 81 of Decatur, Georgia (formerly Avondale Estates) passed away Saturday morning, August 20th. He was born December 17, 1929 in New Orleans, Louisiana to Rev. Virgil Leon Bryant, Sr. and Ruth Hall Bryant. Most of his childhood was spent in Memphis, Tennessee. He was a baseball and football athlete at Southwestern at Memphis (Rhodes College) graduating in 1950. Soon after finishing college, he met Imogene (Jean) King in Memphis and they were married in 1952. It was during this time he began a successful career in medical supply sales as a manufacturer’s representative eventually settling in Atlanta. John was a gifted baritone soloist and was involved in the Decatur Civic Chorus for many years; the Michael O’Neal Singers and the Clairmont Place Crooners. He expressed his love for the Lord in participating in and at times directing the Ingleside Presbyterian and Westminster Presbyterian choirs. He also taught Sunday School and served as an elder at Ingleside for many years.
Professionally, he was known throughout the medical supply sales field through his own company, John T. Bryant, Inc., which he established in 1968 and continued to direct until retirement in 1999. Many in the field today can trace their career beginnings to John T. Bryant, Inc. After retirement, John took up residence at Clairmont Place in Decatur and was elected to serve as the association’s President. He spent the last three years receiving excellent care from the staff of Montclair associated with Clairmont Place. Survivors include his children, son Scott and wife Ann, Snellville, Georgia (their children 1st Lieutenant Adam and wife Suzanne Bryant, El Paso, Texas, Allison and Haley both of Snellville, Georgia); daughter Gina Willis, Charlotte, North Carolina (children Amanda Childress and husband Scott, and Andrew Willis and wife Suzanne), son Tom Bryant also of Charlotte and daughter Suzanne Miller and husband Tracy, Lilburn, Georgia. In addition to his sister, Flo Hackworth, Atlanta, Georgia, he leaves behind numerous nieces and nephews. John was blessed to know all three of his great-grandchildren Lawson, Edie and Olivia Childress. He also leaves behind his very close, significant friend, Barbara Disney to whom the family is deeply indebted for her constant, loving and caring support in recent years. He was preceded in death by his wife of 45 years, Jean Bryant, son Timothy King, son-in-law Eddie Willis, and brother, Rev. Virgil L Bryant, Sr. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, August 23rd at Westminster Presbyterian Church; 1438 Sheridan Road NE Atlanta GA 30324 beginning 11am.
