John Thomas Setzer

October 10, 1909 — June 20, 2009

Mr. John Thomas Setzer, 85, of Tucker, GA died Saturday June 20, 2009.  He was born October 10, 1923 in Bowden, GA.  During WWII, he served in the Navy on a minesweeper and was involved in several naval battles, including the Battle of Leyte Gulf.  In August of 1947, he married Virginia Pitner of Acworth and they had two sons, Jimmy and Mike.  John was an active and faithful member of the Avondale Pattillo United Methodist Church.  He graduated from The University of Georgia with a Bachelor of Business Administration in 1952.  He retired as an Auditor from the Department of Community Affairs where he received the Employee of the Year award from the State of Georgia.  He was a devoted Husband, Father, and Grandfather who loved to go fishing and bowling.  Everyone who knew him loved him.  He is preceded in death by his brother, Frank Setzer and his sister, Unetta Wallace.  John is survived by his wife of 61 years, Virginia Setzer; his two sons, James (Jimmy) Setzer, of Atlanta, GA, Mike and wife Jan Setzer, of Monroe, GA; his sister, Lanore and husband Bob Andrews of Easley, South Carolina; his two grandsons, Kenny and Phillip Setzer of Athens, GA; and several nieces and nephews.  The Funeral Services will be held at Avondale Pattillo United Methodist Church on Tuesday, June 23 at 11:00 A.M.  Pastor David Allen Grady will officiate.  Interment will be held at Westview Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Avondale Pattillo United Methodist Church, 3260 Covington Hwy., Decatur, GA  30032. The family will receive friends from 4:00 to 7:00 P.M. Monday, June 22 at A. S. Turner & Sons.
