Johnnie V. Mcdonald

February 1, 1925 — September 13, 2012

Johnnie V. McDonald, 87, of Decatur passed away peacefully on Thursday September 13, 2012. The daughter of William Marcus Vandiviere and Fannie Mae Purcell, she was the youngest daughter in a family of five girls and one boy raised in Fitzgerald, Georgia. Her grandfather, Cromwell A. Vandiviere, was an attorney and enumerator for the 1900 census in Dawson County; her great grandfather, W.E.C. Vandiviere was a Confederate soldier who died on July 3, 1864 near Marietta, Georgia. Ms. McDonald is survived by Nancy Paris and Melinda Dodson, and their children Lillian Paris, Daniel Dodson and Rachel Dodson. She dearly loved her children and grand-children and took great joy in the extended family they created that included relatives, in-laws and friends. She was well known to customers of Loehmann's where she worked for twenty five years and was a devoted member of North Decatur United Methodist Church for over fifty years. A petite lady with a feisty temperament that matched her red hair, "Miss Johnnie" insisted on being well-groomed at all times and made it a practice never to leave home without make up. Her approach to life was straight forward, organized and prudent. She believed in daily walks, weekly church attendance, immaculate housekeeping, regular check-ups, Final Net, sweet tea and a healthy diet punctuated by the occasional indulgence of her homemade macaroni and cheese. Though long divorced from Nancy and Melinda's father Joseph D. McDonald, she readily agreed to be buried next to him at Floral Hills Memory Gardens on the basis of economy and practicality -- for which her family is very grateful. Her remains will be placed in state at 11:00 am with funeral services at 12 noon on Saturday September 22 at North Decatur United Methodist Church, with Dr. Nicholas Harvey officiating; a reception will follow her services. The family will receive friends on Friday September 21st from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at A. S. Turner & Sons Funeral Home and Crematory.
