Jon Carlson Martin has been granted permission to go ashore. He died unexpectedly on April 8, 2024 in Decatur, GA following complications from a heart attack. He was born August 10, 1946 in Bristol, CT to the late Roger C. and Joan C. Martin.
Jon served our country in the US Navy retiring in 1999 after 31 years as Chief Petty Officer. He was decorated with the Vietnam Service Medal with 1 Bronze Star, Vietnam campaign medal with device, national defense service, Navy unit commendation medal, sea service deployment ribbon and the Navy "E" ribbon. He was a VS-37 and made a WestPac deployment on the USS Nimitz and then went to VS-33 where he made another WestPac deployment on the USS Kitty Hawk. He traveled the world while in the Navy and settled in Alabama after retirement. He moved to Alpharetta, GA in 2009 to be closer to his daughter.,
Jon graduated from Bristol Eastern High School in 1964 and entered the Navy shortly following graduation. During his youth, he was known as "Jonny Fast". He loved fast cars, sometimes to the detriment of his parents. Jon never met a card game or casino that he didn't like. Jon had been living at the Cottonwood Estates in Alpharetta, GA where he had many friends who also loved playing cards with him.
Jon was predeceased by his parents, his brother, Roger C. Martin, Jr., and his nephew Brendan P. O'Neill. A loving father, grandfather and brother, he is survived by his daughter, Heidi Huggins (Jim) and granddaughter Nikki French (Robert), his brother, William R. Martin, Sr., and his sister Sally O'Neill (Don), as well as nephews, Donald M. O'Neill (Lexie), and Maxwell Jon O'Neill. He will be greatly missed by one and all.
Jon will be buried in the Georgia National Cemetery, Canton, GA on April 26, 2024 with full military honors.
