Jon Maxwell Middleton

Jon Maxwell Middleton died Monday, August 4, 2014. He was born in Camden, SC to Arthur Harold Middleton and Marie Pence Middleton,on March 23, 1948. He graduated from Perry (GA) High School in 1966 and entered the United States Army in 1968. He attended "jump school" as well as the NCO Academy (graduating # 4 in his class and achieving the rank of Staff Sergeant) before heading for VietNam in 1969. He distinguished himself in combat and was awarded the Silver Star for "gallantry in action" against a hostile enemy force. Upon returning to the United States, he enrolled in Georgia Southern College. He finished his degree, a BS in Urban Life at Georgia State University, where he received the Larry E. Quinn Award. He joined the DeKalb County Police Department in 1972 and advanced to the rank of Sergeant, taking a lateral transfer to DeKalb County Adult Probation in 1981. After DeKalb County Probation was taken over by the state, he and his family moved to Statesboro, Georgia, where he finished out his career, retiring in 1999. In 1996, he was a volunteer security officer for the Olympics in Atlanta. Additionally, Jon enjoyed being a volunteer road marshal for various professional bicycle races, including the Tour de Georgia, the Tours of California, Utah, Missouri, and Colorado. He worked for several summers as a volunteer four hour worker at Maho Bay Camps in the US Virgin Islands. Jon loved to travel and visited a number of exotic places: Thailand, VietNam, Cambodia, Australia, the Galapagos Islands, Machu Picchu, the Amazon, Egypt, Jordan, Kenya, Tanzania, Italy, Turkey, and Mongolia, as well as numerous states in the US. Jon was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Pence Middleton. He is survived by his wife, Jean Williams Middleton, sons Jay (Ashley) and Andrew (Meredith) Middleton, daughter Vivian Middleton Masi (Joey), grandchildren Adelaide and Celia Middleton, brothers Arthur, Ron (Kathy) Lane (Donna) Middleton, brother­in­law Charles Williams (Terri), five nieces and his mother's husband, Jack Orman. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society or the charity of one's choice. The family will receive friends on Sunday August 10 at from noon to 2:00 pm A. S. Turner and Sons Funeral Home and Crematory
