Joseph Abner Brownlee, Sr., 86, of Clarkston, passed away on September 9, 2016, after a brief stay in the hospital. He was born in Lilburn, Georgia on June 26, 1930, to the late Luther Brownlee and Gussie Flowers Brownlee.
He was retired from the US Air Force after a distinguished career covering more than 20 years of service. He was a veteran of the Korean Conflict and served in Europe. He continued to serve in the US in Orlando, Grand Forks, and Little Rock before returning to Georgia upon his retirement in 1969.
Post-military, he was a truck driver for Interstate Distributors, and also worked at Hormel and Sprocket & Gear. After leaving them, he continued to serve his military family as a volunteer at Ft. Gillem, where he was named the employee of the year in 2000.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Frank and two sisters, Cleo and Charlene. He is survived by one sister Laura Morton of Lilburn, his wife of 63 years, Ruth, son Joseph, Jr., and daughter Jelaine of Clarkston, son Jim of Rutledge, and daughter Betty Ann West of Anderson, South Carolina. There are 8 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held Saturday, September 17, 2016 from 6-8 PM at the A. S. Turner and Sons Funeral Home in Decatur. Funeral service will be on Sunday, September 18 at 3 PM, followed by interment at Melwood Cemetery in Stone Mountain with full military honors.
