Joseph Almon Gatlin, Jr. of Decatur passed away on August 24, 2015 at his parents home while recuperating from an earlier heart attack. Almon was born in New Orleans, September 28, 1960. He spent 10 years of his early childhood in East Africa as a missionary kid (MK). He graduated from Briarcliff High in 1978, and from Georgia State University in 1986 with a degree in Administration of Justice (Suma cum Laude). He worked for First Baptist Decatur Activities Ministry in charge of After School and Summer Camp programs. For the past 18 years he has been employed at the DeKalb County Tax Commissioners offices, first in Property tax and more recently in Vehicle licensing. Almon Is survived by his parents: Joe and Dorothea Gatlin, sister Jeryl Gatlin, two nieces: Larissa Rowe and Caraleigh Tackett, and a special close friend Kathryn Hornsby. His memorial service will be held at First Baptist Decatur on Thursday, August 27, 2015 at 2:30 p.m. with Dr. Peter Rhea Jones and Dr. Bob Williamson officiating. Visitation in the church parlor and hour and a half before the service. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the church Benevolent Fund. A private interment for family only was held earlier.
