Joseph Edward Troutman was born on Jan. 4, 1938 in Concord, NC. He graduated from Mt. Pleasant High School in Mt. Pleasant, NC. in May, 1956. He earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Religious Education from Lenoir Rhyne College in Hickory, NC in May, 1960. He went on to earn three Masters Degrees: Master of Arts from Lutheran School of Theology in Maywood, IL in May, 1964 and a Master in Religious Education from Princeton University in Princeton, NJ in June, 1964.
Joe served as a Child Care Supervisor and Adm. Asst. with a private social work agency in New York City and later was appointed Director of Christian Education and head of youth activates at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Cleveland, OH. In May, 1980 Joe earned a Master of Science in Library Service from The Atlanta University in Atlanta, GA. He earned a Doctor of Ministry from The Interdenominational Theological Center in Atlanta in May, 1992. Joe was employed as the Theological Librarian at the Robert W. Woodruff Library in 1980 at The Interdenominational Theological Center (ITC) which is part of The Atlanta University Center, a consortium of six denominations. While serving in that role he became an Associate Professor of Theological Bibliography at ITC teaching both at the Master of Divinity and Doctoral level while maintaining his library responsibilities.
He Co-Edited the Journal of ITC and was supportive of faculty and student research and publications. On April 21, 2008 he retired after 28 years of service with ITC. Joe was also a faithful member of Lutheran Church of the Redeemer in Midtown Atlanta for 33 years. He served on the Board of Lutheran Towers and was an avid supporter of “Friends of Music” at Redeemer. Joe passed away at Piedmont Hospital on Nov. 8, 2017 after a brief illness at the age of 79.
He was predeceased by his parents, Ellis Eddie Troutman and Onie Yost Troutman, his brothers Ray Lee Troutman and Ross Troutman and sister Iris Troutman Bratton. He is survived by his sister, Sylvia Troutman Kluttz, nephew Keith Kluttz & nieces Starr Kluttz & Beth Lomax all of Concord, NC & nephew, Doug Bratton of Fort Worth, TX and several great nieces & great nephews and close friends.
A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, Nov. 17th at 11:00 a.m. at Lutheran Church of The Redeemer, 731 Peachtree St. NE, Atlanta, GA 30308 with Visitation one hour prior to the service at 10:00 a.m. in the Sims Atrium & a reception following the service. In lieu of flowers Memorial Donations may be made to Lutheran Church of The Redeemer “Friends of Music” at the address listed above.
