Joyce Foster Britt

February 27, 1936 — November 21, 2021

Joyce Foster Britt passed away peacefully at her home in Stone Mountain, Georgia on Sunday, November 21, 2021, after a month of in-home hospice care.

Joyce was born in the Kirkwood neighborhood of Atlanta on February 27, 1936. She was the second of five girls born to Viola “Peggy” Newton and Edmond Foster. The family moved to Statham in 1940, and Joyce enjoyed regaling listeners with stories of her adventures growing up in rural Georgia with her sisters Jean, Joanne, Edna, and Arline.

Joyce graduated from Statham High School (1954) and Johnson Business College in Athens, GA, and she worked as a bookkeeper at Royal Typewriter in Atlanta. It was there that she met Ken Britt, of Decatur, and they married on July 25, 1964.

Joyce and Ken resided in Clarkston for the next 15 years. They welcomed the arrival of their two daughters, Kathy (1966) and Lynda (1971). The family relocated to Loganville in 1979, and Joyce and Ken lived there until they moved to Stone Mountain in 2010.

Joyce was a devoted wife and mother. Her daughters always came first in her life. She was a scout leader for their Brownie and Girl Scout Troops, and she was active in the PTA, serving as PTA President several times. She attended games and meetings, and chaperoned field trips. She volunteered as a teacher’s assistant, and after retirement from Seelbach & Co., where she worked for 15 years, she worked as a substitute teacher in both Walton and Gwinnett counties. She fostered a love of, and care for, others in both of her daughters.

Joyce maintained extraordinarily close relationships with her daughters, and she was always ready for an adventure or road trip. She travelled with them frequently, and later in life she enjoyed camping with them. She loved to be outdoors, even if it was just to sit in the sun and listen to the birds in her backyard or take long car rides to see the changing leaves.

In addition to her own children, Joyce was a surrogate mother and grandmother to many - church members, neighbors, her children’s friends, and anyone who needed to be nurtured and loved.

Joyce was also an avid sports fan who loved Georgia football and the Atlanta Braves. She played basketball in high school, and she attended many Atlanta Dream games with her daughter, Kathy & daughter-in-law, Chris. A recent soccer convert, Joyce enjoyed going to Atlanta United games and following the team on TV.

Those who knew Joyce were aware of her sharp wit and keen sense of humor. She was always up for joking around, and, with a mischievous twinkle ever-present in her eye, she shared laughter wherever she went. Joyce did not live her life as a spectator. She was a participant who was 100% in. She never met a stranger; she was genuinely interested in everyone’s story. She accepted the many hardships and tragedies that she faced with astounding grace. And somehow, no matter how dark things seemed to get, she brought a positive energy to every situation.

Above all else, Joyce was a woman of profound and abiding faith who was a founding member of the Lilburn Church of Christ, and later attended the Lawrenceville Church of Christ. She attended church devotedly all her life, including the Sunday before her passing. Every day she strived to live her life in accordance with her beliefs, and she shared her love of God with everyone she encountered. She was an inspiration in so many ways. She will be deeply missed.

Joyce was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Ken, her daughter Lynda, and her sister Arline. She is survived by her daughter Kathy Britt-Rogers (Chris) of Avondale Estates; her son-in-law Darrell Golliher of Stone Mountain; her sisters Jean McLocklin, Joanne Gresham, and Edna Cain; and four nieces and two nephews.

The family would like to thank Joyce’s caregivers from Visiting Angels - Shela Amin, Kendra Gordon, Paulet Harrison, and others, who provided much needed daily care and companionship for her over the last 2 years.

Donations in Joyce's memory can be made to the American Kidney Fund and the American Cancer Society.

The chapel service will be live streamed for those who cannot make it; it can be accessed by clicking on the tribute wall at the top of the obituary page.
