Joyce Manning Hawes, 88, of McLean, VA, died in Atlanta on Wednesday, January 13. Born in London, England, to Herbert and Ann Manning, Joy graduated from Wimbledon County Girls School and Clark’s College. She served in the women’s branch of the British Army during WWII. In November 1944, Joy married USAF Lt. Warren Hawes. After the war, Joy came to the United States to join her husband, who served in the Air Force for 25 years. During this period, she raised three children, worked as a real estate appraiser, traveled extensively and volunteered for numerous charitable causes. Joy was predeceased by her husband Warren and eldest son Patrick, and is survived by son Michael and his wife Charlotte Marye Hawes of Elliston, VA; daughter Judith Ann and her husband Leslie Klemperer of Atlanta; grandchildren Sharon Hawes Dodd, Tyler Hawes, and Andrew and David Klemperer; and four great grandchildren. A memorial service will be held Saturday, January 16 at 3:00 pm at A.S. Turner & Sons, 2773 North Decatur Road, Decatur, GA 30033. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Our Lady of Perpetual Help Home in Atlanta, a home for terminally ill cancer patients.
