Joyce Walts Rogers

Joyce W. Rogers, 80, of Decatur died Tuesday, June 28th at home, after a long struggle with pancreatic cancer. Joyce was in the company of her son Bradford and pastor Ron Heiber at the time of her passing. Joyce was born December 8th, 1930 in Parnell, Missouri, to Donald and Marceline Walts, and has lived in DeKalb County for 45 years. Her parents moved to Gainesville, Georgia in the 1970s, and she will be laid to rest beside them at Memorial Park Cemetery in Hall County. She is survived by her only son Bradford B. Rogers, an Atlanta resident, business owner, musician, and member of The Recording Academy; and former husband Ray B. Rogers. "Mom was an amazing example of strength and dignity," said Bradford. "To get along and live pretty much independently for four years after the initial pancreatic surgery was a testament to her strength and endurance. She was so caring of others, and always proper without being condescending." Joyce had many friends, and she was particularly thankful to have them around her during the last few years. "Without our friend Bruce Davenport, our cousins Bob and Norma Smyser, and my partner Tanya—as well as her good neighbors the Matthewses and McGuires, she wouldn't have been able to have nearly the kind of quality of life she enjoyed the last few years," said Bradford. "We are so grateful to them, and to David James, who helped keep her yard so beautiful. She was truly blessed to be surrounded by such good people." Her memorial service will be held Friday, July 1st at 11:00 a.m. at Clairmont Presbyterian Church. Visitation will be from 7:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 30th at A.S. Turner & Sons, Decatur.
