Juanita Copeland Baskett died yesterday at home with her husband of 70 years, Melvin, at her side. She was 87 and despite advanced heart disease continued to
provide counsel and inspiration to her many friends and descendants. Living in the shadow of Stone Mountain for the last 45 years she died not too far from her childhood home. To the many Sunday School students in her young adult classes she will always be remembered as "Sister Baskett." Bible study with her often meant looking at texts in the original Greek after she returned to school in 1973 to finish a Bible degree begun in 1943. In addition to Melvin, Juanita will be greatly missed by her 2 sisters and their (husbands), Helen (Archie) Mulkey of Jefferson, and Frances (Bill) Pittard of Jones Creek, daughter, Dian (Thom) Copeland of Orlando, sons, Jim (Mickey) of Decatur, and John (Elaine) of Blue Ridge, 7 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Saturday, March 24, 2012, at the chapel of A. S. Turner & Sons with Rev. Roger Bailey and Rev. Thom Copeland officiating. Interment will be in Fairview Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 PM Friday at A. S. Turner & Sons Funeral Home and Crematory.
