Juanita Shope

Juanita Miller Shope, a former resident of Charlotte, N. C. and a longtime resident of Decatur, Georgia, died at age 93 on May 28, 2010. She was the fourth of six girls, born to David Granville and Gertrude Sertel Miller of Chattanooga, Tennessee. Besides her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, William Burdett Shope, Sr., and her oldest sister, Nancy Patton, of     Nashville, TN. She was a 1934 graduate of City High in Chattanooga, TN where she was a cheerleader.  Always young in spirit, her life as a homemaker was devoted to her family and many close friends. Her competitiveness at the bridge table was only rivaled by her art of entertaining, her gourmet cooking, and her talent at setting a beautiful holiday table. Survivors include her four children and their spouses: son, William Burdett Shope, Jr. and wife, Hilda, of Tucson, AZ, daughters, Judith Scanlon and husband, James, of Bogart, GA, Jill Parten and husband, John, of Alameda, CA and Pamela Lunsford, her loving caregiver for many years, and husband, Danny, of Lawrenceville, GA.  She is also survived by five grandchildren and four great grandchildren: David Shope (Jan and her daughter, Jillian Ledford) of Charlotte, NC, and his children, Jennifer (Jerry) Myatt and Stephen and their mother, Laura Edwards; John Shope (Renee) and children, Brandon and Kaylee of Leland, NC; The Reverend Jonathan Scanlon of Oxford, MS; Paul Lunsford of Atlanta, GA, and Anna  Scanlon of New York City; two step-grandchildren of Phoenix, AZ, Allison Parten and April Knife (Kevin) and children, Lily and Rowan, as well as many adored nieces and nephews. Her surviving sisters are Martha Sudderth of Johnson City, TN, Nelda Jarvis of Chattanooga, TN, Bettye Sue Reep (James) of Charlotte, NC and Joanne Vaughn (James) of Kansas City, KS. Her surviving brother-in-law is Fred Shope (Sue) of Marietta, GA.  The celebration of her life will be held at A. S. Turner & Sons Funeral Home at 11:00 A.M. on Friday, June 4, 2010, followed by interment at White Chapel Memorial Gardens.  Memorial gifts may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, 1925 Century Blvd., N.E.,  Atlanta, GA 30345-3315. Family and friends will be received Thursday from 4:00  to 7:00 P.M. and one hour prior to the service at A. S. Turner & Sons, Decatur, GA.
