Julia Alice Nelms was born in an Atlanta neighborhood called Kirkwood on 06-Dec-1928 (according to her Birth Certificate.. all official records say 1929). Her parents were Minnie Lucille Perkins Nelms (b.1908, Ashe County North Carolina - d.1969, Decatur Ga) and William J. "Buck" Nelms (b.1906, Atlanta Ga - d.1993, La Vergne, Tennessee). Lucille was known by all of Julia's sons as "Mom" and was instrumental in their rearing. Julia worked as a secretary for the Georgia State Department of Education - Curriculum Division for many years, then later for the Georgia Public Broadcasting Station.
Julia was married to Douglas Embry 10-Sep-1948, in Kirkwood.. Married for over 25 years, the story goes that they met on a Trolley car going to Atlanta. Julia is survived by her four(4) sons and their wives: Stephen & Penny, Phillip & Joanne, Tim & Maxi and Mark & Melinda. Julia is also survived by her only grandson and his wife, Jason & Kristi Embry and their two (2) daughters Harper and Huxley. Jason is the son of Phillip and Joanne Embry
Julia was known for her capacity to love others and there were many stories of her "adopting" kids in the neighborhood and later "adopting" an assortment of boarders. She had a heart as big as Stone Mountain and the world will miss her smile..
In lieu of flowers we ask that make a donation in Julia’s name to your local Humane Society.
