Katherine Angel Algers

April 4, 1913 — January 19, 2009

After spending many years in the Atlanta business community, as the owner of Dogwood Furniture Stores, Kitty decided to retire at age 85 and devote herself to helping her family, church, and friends with their day to day problems, as well as end-of-life issues. Katherine A. Algers, 95, was tirelessly pursuing her passion for life, when she died peacefully Monday night at the Embracing Hospice House, in Cumming, GA. Kitty Algers grew up in Brooklyn, NY, as the daughter of Athan and Lily Angelopoulos from Volos, Greece. She later met and married her beloved childhood sweetheart, Andrew George Algers, a transplanted Southerner. Andy and Kitty ran several businesses in Brooklyn and also gave birth to two lovely daughters, Thalia Joyce and Michele Georgia. After much consternation, Andy decided to move the family back to the South where life would take on a new vigor. When they arrived in Atlanta, Ga., in 1947, they founded Dogwood Furniture Stores and joined the Greek Orthodox Church. During the next 5 years, his entire family migrated to Atlanta, where he is currently survived by his sister, Mary Farmakis, 96, who is also Kitty's best friend of 81 years. After Andy passed away in 1965, Kitty successfully ran and grew Dogwood, the first retail discount furniture store in Atlanta. She also faithfully served her Greek Orthodox community and saw her daughters both graduate from college with advanced degrees. Many parishioners and friends still feel a strong connection to her, because "She always had time for you; even with her hectic life, Kitty was never in a big hurry to leave you alone." She spent her last 8 years at The Atrium, where she and Mary organized a lively Bingo hour for the residents. Katherine Algers is survived by her daughters and son-in-laws, Bill and Thalia Gerard of Charleston, SC and Ben and Michele Perry of Duluth, GA.; her grandsons, Andy and Jason Luckey, granddaughter, Angie Kabo, and their spouses Jill Luckey, Shawna Luckey, and Mark Kabo. Her great grandchildren include Drew and Kate Luckey of Beaufort, SC; Michael and Nicholas Luckey of Santa Fe, NM; and Christina, Abby and Justin Kabo of Cumming, GA. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, January 23rd at the A. S. Turner & Sons Funeral Home, 2773 N. Decatur Rd., Decatur, GA 30033. There will be Orthros and Divine Liturgy at 11 am Saturday, January 24th at the Greek Orthodox Cathedral of The Annunciation, 2500 Clairmont Road, Atlanta, GA 30329 and a graveside ceremony at Greenwood Cemetery where Katherine Algers beloved remains will be laid to rest next to her husband Andrew. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations for the Embracing Hospice House, 8013 Majors Rd., Cumming, GA 30041, which lovingly cared for her in her last hours or The Greek Orthodox Cathedral of The Annunciation.
