Katherine Morrison Burks

July 29, 1915 — November 20, 2012

Katherine Morrison Burks, age 97, of Atlanta, died Tuesday, November 20, 2012. She was born July 29, 1915, in College Park, GA to the late Winfield Scott Morrison, Sr. and Katie Whitman Morrison. She was preceded in death by her husband of 22 years, Blair Burks. Katherine Belle and her brother Floyd Ewin were the first set of twins born in College Park, and the double baby-carriage given by their grandfather was a delightful novelty in 1915 College Park. The only daughter in a family of five children, Katherine attended Girls High School in Atlanta before taking a job at the Georgia Power Company around 1931. After about ten years at Georgia Power, Katherine began working at Southern Railroad and remained with Southern until she retired in 1975. Her nearly 34 years in the accounting department with Southern were very rewarding and successful. It was while she was at Southern Railroad that she met Blair Burks, the supervisor of the rates department. They were married on August 7, 1965. For many years they were active members of Briarlake Baptist Church, participating in Sunday School, the Young at Heart, and on Welcoming Committees. After their retirement, Katherine and Blair enjoyed traveling and attending Georgia Tech football games. The centerpieces of Katherine's life were faith and family. She was a life-long Baptist whose family attended Kirkwood Baptist, where she was baptized at age 9. Affectionate and vivacious, Katherine's presence at family gatherings always added fun to the occasion. She had a wonderful sense of humor and it was never hard for her to see the funny side of a situation. Her charming Southern accent, easy laugh, and ability to make everyone feel welcome combined to make her the quintessential Southern lady. Katherine had many friends and loved Braves baseball, playing bridge, and her time at King's Bridge; she often said her only regret was not making the move sooner. She was a wonderful wife, sister, step-mother, step-grandmother, and aunt, and she will be deeply missed. Her family has been extremely blessed to have had her in their lives for so many years. Mrs. Burks is survived by her step-daughter and husband, Caroline and Bill Kethley of Athens; sister-in-law Evelyn Morrison of Tucker; nieces Kay Dickinson, Christy Pegram, Joanne Helms, Judy Kinsey, Joyce Morrison, and June Diane Klement; nephew Scott Morrison; step-grandchildren Tom Kethley, Jim Kethley, Nancy Brownlow, and John Kethley and their families; thirteen great-nieces and great-nephews; three great-great nephews and one great-great niece. She was preceded in death by her brothers Winfield S. Morrison, Jr., Floyd E. Morrison, James T. Morrison, and Joseph F. Morrison. A memorial service will be held at The Pavilion at King's Bridge, 3055 Briarcliff Rd, NE, Atlanta, at 2pm on Tuesday, November 27, the Reverend Greg Smith officiating. Internment will follow at Westview Cemetery. The family will receive friends prior to the service at 1:30pm. Flowers are accepted or donations may be made to Hospice Atlanta, 1244 Park Vista Dr, Atlanta, GA 30319. A.S. Turner and Sons Funeral Home and Crematory.
