Mrs. Kathleen (Kay) C. Chewning of Stone Mountain, GA passed away on Sunday, October 26, 2008. She was preceded in death in 2006 by her husband of 58 years, Mr. Ralph E. Chewning, Sr. A federal employee of 23 years, she held positions in Chicago, Washington D. C., New York and Atlanta, retiring as a Supervisory Accounting Technician (Unit Supervisor) of the Internal Revenue Service at the Atlanta Service Center. An accomplished basketball player in her youth in Carson, Iowa, she also held a lifelong love of music as a pianist, vocalist and hand bell performer. Kay sang in the church choirs from the age of 6 and, until a few months before her death, participated in the chorus at the Park Springs Retirement Community in Stone Mountain, Georgia. She became a member of Eastminster Presbyterian Church of Stone Mountain in 1973 and actively participated in its music program. She is survived by sons and daughters-in-law, Dr. Richard D. and Catherine J. Chewning of Griffin, GA, Ralph E. (Buddy) and Karen B. Chewning, Jr. of Overland Park, Kansas; grandchildren, Mary Catherine Chewning of Rome, GA, Elizabeth Anne Chewning of Griffin, GA, and Richard D. Chewning II of Jekyll Island, GA; Brandey C. Smith and husband Brian of Overland Park, Kansas and Drew C. Chewning and wife Kianne of Olathe Kansas; and great grandchildren, Aislinn and Madelinn Smith of Overland Park, Kansas. Visitation with the family will be held from 11:30 until 12:30 in Founder’s Hall of Eastminster Presbyterian Church of Stone Mountain on Friday October 31st followed by the funeral service at 12:30 PM in the Sanctuary.
