Memories of Kathryn Crawford Greenway - from her loving family
Kathryn Crawford Greenway, a native Georgian, died peacefully at home on September 14, 2022 in Decatur where she lived since 1953. She was doing what she loved to do - sit on her front porch and watch the world go by - as she quietly slipped away to her heavenly home. She was 97 years young.
She is now reunited with her husband, Hubert T. Greenway, who preceded her in death 35 years ago. She is survived by her five children, Hubert Greenway, Jr (Colleen) of Rancho Santa Fe, CA, Carolyn Bishop (David) of Atlanta, Susan Muro (Greg) of Birmingham, AL, Jane Warren (Jim) of Atlanta, and Tom Greenway (Sylvia) of Hiram, GA. Each is grateful for the privilege to call her our “Mother.”
Kathryn was also known as “Kitty,” Grandma, and GG. She has 9 grandchildren, Kathy Stenslie (Joel) of Columbus, GA, Robin Mooney (Jack) of Watkinsville, GA, Christopher Muro (Dana) of Franklin Lakes, NJ, Natalie Filar (Travis) of Signal Mountain, TN, Michelle Heck (Andy) of Marietta, GA, Rachel Hubbard (Stefan) of Nashville, TN, Nicole Swiney (Chase) of Fulshear, TX, John Greenway (Mareen) of Redondo Beach, CA, and Will Greenway of Gresham, OR. Kathryn has25 active great grandchildren who lovingly called her GG and GrandmaG. She loved them visiting and bringing her Chick-Fil-A, which was her favorite food choice! She and her husband loved supporting the Georgia Bulldogs and greeted them as they stepped across the UGA rug placed right in front of her porch door.
She was feisty, headstrong and determined to live life on her terms. So it was fitting that she would spend her final years living at home, with the wonderful care of her faithful caregivers: Jackie Brown, Jovi Small, Sharon Greene, Dionne Sylvester, Paige Johnson and Ruby Fishe. She loved those girls, and they loved her. Her family is forever grateful to them for taking care of Mrs. Greenway, and to the neighbors and other family members that would always check on her.
Kathryn Eugenia Crawford was born on a farm on July 10, 1925, in Elberton, GA to George and Faith Crawford. Kathryn played basketball to strengthen her legs after surviving polio and then graduated from Rock Branch High School. She attended Toccoa Falls Institute and used her secretarial skills to find work in Atlanta. Growing up, she knew Hubert Greenway, also from Elberton, but they met again after he returned from WWII. They married in Athens in 1946 as he was completing school and then moved to Atlanta.
She and Hubert were a special couple; Kathryn raised a family drawing strength from her early years of church and close-knit family; Hubert survived kidney failure, served his church and scouts, and loved to tell good stories and laugh. Together they built a wonderful life in their Decatur community and were lifelong members of First Baptist Church of Decatur. They raised their children to know the meaning of a personal faith in Christ, to love family and serve others. Kitty, as her friends called her, belonged to the Gleaners Sunday school class.
She will be remembered by her family with loving memories and many stories - told and retold during many visits. Even these past months, she continued at age 97 to ask if she should go fix some food. When her kids, grandkids and greats would draw her into conversation, she would say “I don’t know nothin’ about nothin’.” All laughed, as she was famous for correcting everyone to use proper English.
God gave her a long and fruitful life and she loved her family, home, and faith until the very end. She will be missed by her loved ones here, as she is celebrated by those she joins in Heaven.
