Kathryn "Kitty" Mozley
Kathryn "Kitty" Riley Mozley passed away peacefully on March 9, 2017, with her beloved husband of 66 years, Bob, at her side and in the Decatur home that she loved and that they had built together in 1960. Kitty was born on December 28, 1927, the answer to her sister Mary Lois' prayer for a little sister. They grew up on Ponce de Leon Ave. in Decatur, surrounded by extended family and school friends who would remain friends for a lifetime.
Kitty graduated from Decatur Girls' High in 1945 and attended the Wesleyan Conservatory in Macon before transferring to the University of Georgia in the Fall of 1946, where she pledged Kappa Alpha Theta. She studied business, graduating from UGA in 1949, but not before meeting a handsome law student, Robert "Bob" Mozley of Marietta. They married on December 14, 1950, living in Decatur, Tampa, and Miami, before returning to Decatur in June of 1958. In September of 1958, they adopted a baby girl they named Karyn.
Kitty was a creative and gracious homemaker, planting flowers, refinishing furniture, hosting dinner parties and a bridge club or "sewing" club, and cooking meals for the sick. Her dream home appeared in Better Homes and Gardens magazine in 1963 and 1964.
Over the years she volunteered with numerous organizations, including the DeKalb County Junior League, Atlanta Alumnae of Kappa Alpha Theta, and the Atlanta Council of Campfire Girls.
Kitty was a lifelong and third generation member of Decatur First United Methodist Church. Her grandfather's name, Wesley Hamilton Weekes, is on the cornerstone of the old church, now the chapel. In 1973 her faith became real at the Atlanta Billy Graham Crusade, when she accepted Jesus Christ as her personal Savior. Kitty served the Lord and her church in several roles over the years — children's Sunday School teacher, the Altar Guild, the Archives, United Methodist Women, and in the Sunday evening prayer group. She was active in several Bible studies and Christian Women's groups.
Kitty was preceded in death only three days by her sister, Mary Lois Hastings. She is survived by her husband of 66 years, Robert (Bob) Mozley; daughter and son-in-law, Karyn and Jerry Whigham; nephew, Dr. Mark Hastings; niece, Jill Hastings Thompson; great-niece and great-nephews, Jill Marie Martin (Taylor), Hamilton Letts, and Daniel Thompson; first cousin, Jody Weekes Sams (Gary) and many beloved cousins and friends.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday, March 16th, at 2:30 in the sanctuary of Decatur First United Methodist Church with Dr. David Jones officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the United Methodist Children's Home, 500 S. Columbia Drive, Decatur, GA 30030 (www.umchildrenshome.org) or to Aldersgate / Collinswood, 4105 Briarcliff Road NE, Atlanta, GA 30345 (www.aldersgatehomes.com).The family will receive friends on Wednesday, March 15th from 5:00 until 7:00 PM at A.S.
