Ken Kenny Britt, age 78, died in his Stone Mountain, GA Home on July, 4, 2015, following an extended illness. His passage was peaceful, and his beloved family surrounded him.
Born November 25, 1936, in New Orleans, LA, to Harry Hughes Britt and Marion Marrero Britt, Ken moved to Decatur, GA at the age of 3. He attended Decatur High School where his gregarious personality and drive led him to be elected Class President. While attending Decatur High School, he was a member of both the National Honors Society and Beta Club, and also participated in the ROTC. Ken graduated with the Class of 1955.
Ken was a natural athlete and while at Decatur High School he lettered in football, basketball, and baseball. His love of athletics continued throughout his entire life as a player, coach and spectator. As a young adult he bowled in a competitive league and also played softball and basketball. Ken coached both daughters' softball teams and taught himself to play tennis to help them train in that sport as well. But as anyone who knew Ken could verify, his greatest sports love was golf, which he continued to play regularly until his passing.
Ken attended the University of Georgia for one year before transferring to Georgia State University to finish his Bachelors Degree in Business Administration and Accounting. Following college, he served as First Lieutenant Artillery in the US Army, stationed in both Texas and Georgia. He was honorably discharged in 1967.
Ken then began his accounting career at Royal Typewriter in Atlanta, where he met and fell in love with Joyce Foster. The couple was married on July 25, 1964. Ken subsequently worked in the banking industry for several years before settling at Georgia Perimeter College, where he worked as the business manager and later as auditor. He retired from Georgia Perimeter College in 1998 after 25 years.
In 1979 Ken and his family moved to Loganville, GA. Although he was raised in the city, Ken quickly adapted to life as a country boy. He loved driving his tractor, and planted large vegetable gardens and fruit trees. In 2010 Ken and Joyce moved to Stone Mountain to be closer to their daughters. He continued to enjoy working outdoors, playing golf, and became a rabid fan of the WNBA's Atlanta Dream.
Ken will be remembered for his abundant sense of humor, his ready smile, and his great love of animals. He was a man of principle with a steadfast sense of right and wrong. But most importantly, Ken will be remembered as a man who was wholly devoted to his family.
Ken is survived by his wife, Joyce Foster Britt, and his daughters, Kathy Britt-Rogers (Chris) and Lynda Britt Golliher (Darrell). The family will receive friends on Wednesday, July 8, 2015 from 5:00 until 7:00 pm at A. S. Turner and Sons Funeral Home in Decatur, GA. Funeral Services will be held Thursday, July 9, 2015 at 10:30 am at A. S. Turner and Sons Chapel, followed by interment at the Decatur Cemetery. Ken would be delighted if those attending his services would wear pink in his honor.
