Kenneth N. Walton

May 1, 1935 — April 15, 2005

Dr. Kenneth Walton died on April 15th after a prolonged illness. He was a respected urologic surgeon, author, and teacher. His career spanned 20 years at Emory University and 5 years at Piedmont Hospital before retiring in 1995 at age 60. Dr. Walton was born in 1935 in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. After completing residency training at John Hopkins, he became the first Chairman of Urology at the University of Kentucky. He later accepted a position as Chairman of Urology at Emory University which he held from 1969 to 1986. He cherished the urology residents he helped train, took pride in their accomplishments, and authored numerous journal articles and book chapters. During his tenure, he served on many urologic boards and was active in the Society of Pelvic Surgeons, the Society of University Urologists, the American Urologic Association, the Georgia Urologic Society and the Atlanta Urologic Association. He and his wife, Bette, have established an endowment fund at the University of Manitoba for medical student research scholars. Since retiring, he loved to travel abroad with Bette, particularly enjoying their many trips to Switzerland with close friends. His greatest joy always revolved around his family. He spent endless hours teaching his four sons, and later his 8 grandchildren, swimming, fishing and boating. He was an avid golfer and tennis player who thoroughly enjoyed playing with family and friends. He and Bette were inseparable-truly devoted life partners who began as high school sweethearts and developed an everlasting love. He is survived by his wife Elizabeth "Bette" Walton, four sons and their spouses, Keith, Gary and Nancy, Glen and Elizabeth, and Scott and Meg. Eight grandchildren, Nicholas, Maggie, Benjamin, Andrew, Miller, Elizabeth, Claire and Peter. And a brother Dick Walton of Winnipeg, Canada. A memorial service is planned for Wednesday 2 PM at A. S. Turner & Sons Funeral Home in Decatur followed by a family receiving at the Houston Mill House from 3-6 pm. In lieu of flowers, memorials donations can be made to "The Kenneth and Elizabeth Walton Research Scholarship in Medicine", University of Manitoba, Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, R3T 2N2. A. S.
