Mr. Kevin Hunter of Ellenwood, GA died Friday, March 4, 2011. He was 55. Mr. Hunter, a long-time employee of DeKalb County, grew up in Memphis, Tenn. He graduated from Carver High School in 1973, and then went on to attend Tennessee State University, where he graduated with a bachelor's degree in science in 1982. A civil engineer by trade, Mr. Hunter professional career spanned more than 25 years, including time at the Sacramento County Planning Department. He moved to Georgia in the late 1990s, where he began working in the DeKalb County planning and zoning department in 1999. Mr. Hunter was employed there for the past 13 years, rising from senior planner to the county's zoning administrator. As zoning administrator, Mr. Hunter was integral to growth and development in the county. That influence is something he was always proud of, as he recounted stories often about the work he was so dedicated to. Aside from his career, Mr. Hunter was also an outgoing guy who enjoyed jazz, tennis, weigh-lifting and basketball, having garnered high school athletic awards. He also had been a Masonic member, received architectural awards, and championed a number of causes over the years. Mr. Hunter also dedicated time to his family, making trips back to Memphis, Tenn., where his mother still resides. Mr. Hunter is survived by a son, Kevin Hunter II, of Conyers, Ga.; his mother, Claudie Hunter Todd (Willis), of Memphis, Tenn.; two sisters, Rosemary Jackson and Victoria Rayborn (Calvin), both of Memphis, Tenn., a fiancé, Gwen Gordon, of Ellenwood, Ga., and a host of other family and friends. He was preceded in death by his father, Charlie Hunter, Jr. A memorial service will be held for Mr. Hunter at 9 a.m., Thursday, March 10, at the Old Courthouse in downtown Decatur, Ga.
