LaVerne Johnson Brewer, a resident of Fayetteville since 1988, died Tuesday, July 15 at Fairburn Health Care Center. Born September 6, 1923 in Marbury, AL, LaVerne was the 7th of 8 children born to Robert and Alma Johnson and was the last remaining family member. In 1940, at the age of 17, she relocated to Macon, where her first job was with Bateman's Packaging. In 1941 she began working at the Navel Ordnance Plant until the end of WWII. In 1946, following his return from the war, she married L. W. Brewer. They both began their long careers with Colonial Stores, later moving to Atlanta in 1953, where they purchased their first home. LaVerne enjoyed a 40-year career with Colonial/Big Star, retiring in 1985 at the age of 62. Following retirement, she volunteered weekly, for seventeen years, driving the van and assisting seniors in the East Atlanta community on outings and shopping trips. LaVerne was a faithful member of Martha Brown United Methodist Church in East Atlanta for over 50 years. She lived a Godly and unselfish life, always thoughtful and kind, and striving to help others. Her countenance reflected her peaceful and loving spirit, for which strangers often told her she had such a sweet smile and expression. She is survived by several nieces and nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews, and will be greatly missed by all her family and friends. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations my be made to your local chapter of Disabled Veterans of America or the Wounded Warrior Project, P. O. Box 758517, Topeka, KS 66675. The family will receive friends one hour prior to services, which will be held Friday, July 18 at 11:00 AM at A. S. Turner and Sons Funeral Home and Crematory.
