Lawrence F. Hopper, Jr., 69, of Decatur, GA, passed away on Tuesday, September 3, 2013 at his home. Lawrence was born on November 7, 1943 in Bassett, Virginia to the late Lawrence Fitchue Hopper, Sr. and Ola Nocomis Hopper. Lawrence graduated from G.W. Carver High School in Fieldale, VA in 1961. He served four years in the U.S. Navy and resided in New York City for over forty years, where he retired from Shearson Associates. Lawrence was a prolific poet and he received a B.A. Degree in Literature from Brooklyn College in 2007. He moved to Decatur, GA in 2008 and he served on the board at Ridley-Howard House for over three years. Lawrence has been a devout Buddhist since 1969 and was active with Soka Gakkai of America, in which held multiple leadership positions. In addition to his parents, Lawrence was preceded in death by his sisters Madella Hopper, Panthie H. Sass, and Winona H. Johnson. He is Survived by his sister, Jackie H. Martin of Tampa, FL; two brothers, Luico Hopper and wife, Mercedes Walton-Hopper of Mendham, NJ, and Lowell Hopper and wife, Rose Hopper of Panama City, FL; his niece and nephew-in-law, Anne and Maurice Benford of Lilburn, GA; and a host of other loving nieces and nephews, neighbors, and friends. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the American Cancer Society. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. A memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m. Saturday, September 14, 2013, at A.S. Turner Funeral Home and Crematory in Decatur, GA.
