Lawrence Holland Brice went home to be with the Lord on January 2, 2015 at the age of 87. Lawrence and Jeannine, his wife of 63 years, have been residents of Avondale Estates, GA since 1968. Lawrence was born in Birmingham, Alabama on August 5, 1927. After beginning work on his undergraduate degree, he left Birmingham Southern University during World War II to join the US Navy where he served for two and half years on active duty. When the war ended he joined the Naval Reserves and returned to Birmingham Southern to complete his degree. He later earned his Master's degree from the University of Alabama, where he met Jeannine.
He worked for Southern Bell Company in the Accounting office for 36 years and retired in 1987. While working he was active in the Kiwanis Club and Junior Achievement Program.
Lawrence enjoyed woodworking and painting pictures. He was great with his hands and could repair almost anything (except for a clock). He loved to play pool and tennis and, after retirement, was on the tennis courts at least four days a week.
Lawrence had a very strong work ethic and a passion for continuing to learn new things and taking on new challenges. He was an avid bridge player and he and Jeannine belonged to about four different couple's groups. In addition, he belonged to a men's bridge foursome. Plus, he enjoyed Big Band music, playing the clarinet, the piano and electric keyboard and working on the computer. He was active in the Avondale Community Club where he served as President for two years and as Treasurer for seven years. He also worked on the Finance Committee for the City of Avondale Estates for two years.
Lawrence and Jeannine joined Decatur First Methodist Church in 1954 and are still affiliated with the Fellowship Class where Lawrence previously served as President three different years and as Treasurer for seven years.
Lawrence's family was very important to him and he was very proud of his three sons and their families. He is survived by his wife, Jeannine Ferrill Brice; his son James Ferrill Brice, his wife Shirley McGee Brice and their children James Sanford Brice and Janene Shirley Brice; his son William Holland Brice, his wife Cathy Ballard Brice and their children Rachael Nichole Brice and Phillip Holland Brice; and his son Thomas Allen Brice, his wife Leah Vinson Brice and their children Sarah Brice Post, her husband Jonathon Robert Post, Samuel Lawrence Brice and Harrison Vinson Brice.
A celebration of Lawrence's life will be held on Thursday January 8, 2015, at A.S. Turner and Son's Funeral Home in Decatur, GA, led by Dr. David Jones. Visitation will begin at 1:30 p.m. and the service will begin at 3:00 p.m. Interment will be at the Floral Hills Memory Gardens located at 3000 Lawrenceville Highway across from Rheoboth Baptist Church.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that gifts in Lawrence's memory be made to the Fellowship Class or the Music Ministry Program at Decatur First United Methodist Church, 300 East Ponce de Leon Avenue, Decatur, GA 30030.
