Leon L. Zabenko, age 86, died from complications associated with Alzheimer's disease on August 26, 2004. He was born on March 26, 1918, one of seven children born to Russian immigrants Leonty and Feodosia Zabenko. He grew up in Wilmington, Delaware. Mr. Zabenko was a member of the first graduating class of Conrad High School outside Wilmington. He served in the army in the Pacific theater during WWII, earning the Purple Heart for combat on Biak Island. For twenty years he owned the Zabenko Piano House in Tallahassee, Florida. He then earned a RN degree and enjoyed a second career in nursing at the Veterans' Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia. He is survived by his faithful wife of 62 years, Cornelia Mathis Zabenko; his sister, Elizabeth Moore and her husband Harold Moore, several sisters-in-law, and numerous nephews and nieces, great nephews and great nieces. Visitation is at 10:00 a.m., prior to the service at 11:00 a.m., on Monday, August 30, at Briarcliff United Methodist Church, assistant pastor Jeremy M. Lawson, presiding.
