Lonnie Eugene Cox, Jr.

Lonnie (Lon) E. Cox, Jr. Thursday, March 5, 2009. He was born June 22, 1931 in Covington, Georgia. His mother, Mary Collum Cox, died in 1986 and his father, Lonnie E. Cox, Sr. died in 1987. In 1937, they moved to Atlanta and he attended Moreland Avenue Grammar School and Bass High School where he graduated Valedictorian of the class of 1950. He attended Emory University on a scholarship and received an AB degree in 1954 and a Master of Science degree in Biology in 1955. While there, he was a member of the Phi Sigma Biological Society and the Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity. He served as a 1st Lt. in the USAF from 1955 - 1957 at the 4453 USAF Hospital at Shaw Air Force Base, SC. While there, he served as Hospital Laboratory Officer and Medical Service Accounting Officer. He remained in the inactive Reserves until 1972 when he resigned with the rank of Captain. In 1957, he joined E. R. Squibb & Sons Pharmaceutical Company in the Animal Health Division calling on Veterinarians and Veterinary Wholesalers. In 1969, he joined the Full Line Division of the company where he called on Physicians, Drug Stores, and Drug Wholesalers until 1989 when he retired as a Senior Sales Rep and a member of the company's honorary Hakeem Society. During his life, he was great lover of dogs, especially the hound breed. There were probably no more than 10 - 12 years of his life that he didn't have one or more dogs. His most recent dog, "Chase", a champion Golden Whippet Hound, left this life on Feb. 22, 1999 at the age of 16. Lon was a supporter of the Atlanta Humane Society, The Humane Society of the U.S., and the American Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. He was an active member of First Christian Church of Atlanta and an inactive member of the Crusaders Bible Class. He was a Patron of the Arts and was a supporter of the Music and Arts at First Christian Church of Atlanta. Survivors include an uncle, Elery C. Hogan of Atlanta, and several cousins. Funeral services will be held on Sunday, March 8th at the First Christian Church of Atlanta, 4532 LaVista Rd., Tucker, GA, Rev. Richard D. Branaman and Rev. Kris Light Branaman officiating. The family will receive friends after the service at the church.  Flowers will be accepted, but those desiring may make memorial contributions in his name to the Music and Arts Ministry of First Christian Church of Atlanta or the Atlanta Humane Society.
