Lorene Marett Waldrip

February 22, 1912 — July 30, 2009

Lorene Marett Waldrip, of Decatur, passed away on Thursday, July 30, 2009. Born in 1912 to the late Grover Cleveland Marett and Nobie Baker Marett, she was age 97. She is survived by a son, Emory Waldrip of Naples Florida and Lake George, New York, and a brother, Donald Marett of Corsicanna, Texas. Born on a farm in Hart County, Georgia, she grew up in and around Lavonia. The second oldest of six children, she worked on the family farm every morning and walked two miles to the school bus to attend school in a one-room school house. At 16 she moved to Atlanta in 1928 and graduated from Crawford W. Long nursing school in 1934. She worked as a private duty nurse for many years and later was a full time homemaker. She was a long-time member of Clairmont Hill Baptist Church, holding leadership positions in Sunday School and Women's Missionary Union. Through the WMU programs she travelled to Central America to work with and assist the missionaries there. She will be remembered as a kind, people-oriented and deeply religious person who always was positive and energetic with a sense of humor. When asked, even during her final days, how she was doing, her response while waving her arms in the air for emphasis still was her familiar "I'm fit as a fiddle". She will be remembered as inspirational to all those who knew her. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Clairmont Hills Baptist Church. Funeral services will be held Tuesday morning, August 4th at 11AM at Clairmont Hills Baptist Church with the remains being placed in state at 10AM, Reverend Larry Burgess and Reverend Fred Pitts officiating. Interment Westview Cemetery. Friends are invited to visit with the family Monday evening from 5 until 7PM at A. S. Turner & Sons, 404-292-1551.
