Louis Sheldon Matthews, Jr.

Louis Sheldon Matthews, Jr, age 89, of McDonough, passed away on Friday, January 20, 2017. Louis, known as Lou, was born in Harriman, TN in 1927 and moved to Hollywood, FL when he was 6 years old. He graduated from S. Broward High School in 1946 and served in the Army in Korea. After returning home he attended FSU in Tallahassee, FL. He transferred to GA Tech after his freshman year and graduated in 1954 with a degree in Civil Engineering. He was a member of Chi Psi fraternity. He became a Registered Professional Engineer and Registered Land Surveyor. He was also a licensed Real Estate salesperson and held memberships with NSPE, ASCE and SAMSOG. He was presented Developer of the Year by the Upper Chattahoochee River, Soil and Water Conservation District in 1988. During his years of employment he was an engineer with DeKalb Co. and in 1965 became Gwinnett Co.'s first county engineer. He was Vice President at GA Federal Bank in the GA Associated Services Division, where he was employed for 20 years. After moving to Henry Co., he was county engineer when Henry was undergoing a building boom. He helped write many codes and regulations. He retired from Henry in 1998 and again in 2009. Lou married a Piedmont Hospital nurse, Martha in 1952 and they were married for 64 years. He was a member of First Baptist Church, Avondale Estates, GA since 1955 where he served as Sunday School teacher, Sunday School Department Superintendent, Deacon and Visitation Director. He is survived by his wife, Martha; daughter, Terri M. Stephens; son, Mark S. (and Jane) Matthews; 3 grandchildren, Michael Stephens, Danielle Matthews and Julianne Matthews; 2 sisters in Granite Falls, NC, Mary Dee Stevens and Linda Windelken. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be at First Baptist Church, Avondale Estates at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, January 24, 2017. Burial will follow at Eastlawn Memorial Gardens in McDonough. The family will receive friends on Monday, January 23rd from 4 - 7 PM at A.S. Turner and Sons Funeral Home and Crematory.
