Lovina Borghorst, 93, of Decatur, Georgia, passed away April 6, 2017 at Arbor Terrace of Decatur Assisted Living. Lovina was born April 3, 1924 in Alcester, South Dakota to Carl and Helma (Halverson) Oden.
She graduated from Elk Point High School in 1942 and received a teaching certificate from the University of South Dakota in 1944. Lovina taught school for six years in; Aberdeen, South Dakota, Mapleton, Iowa and Yankton, South Dakota. During the summers she worked in retail sales in Minneapolis, Minnesota. On April, 15, 1950 Lovina married Floyd Borghorst in Yankton, South Dakota. They lived in St. Paul, Minnesota for thirty eight years until retirement and then moved to Deland, Florida. Floyd and Lovina were avid travelers and spent time in retirement traveling and visiting friends and relatives in Minnesota, South Dakota and countries in Europe. Floyd and Lovina were married for fifty-one years until Floyd's passing in 2002. In recent years Lovina traveled to Nova Scotia and to the country of her family's origin, Norway. Lovina enjoyed all types of needlework, reading and tending her flowers and gardens. In 2013 Lovina moved to Atlanta, Georgia and continued to enjoy a variety of activities with her daughter and other children who visited often.
Lovina was preceded in death by Floyd Borghorst, her sisters: Alvesta Dahlum, Ruby Troskey, Frances Allegree, and her brother Clifford Oden.
Among those who survive and gratefully shared her life are a sister JaNice Hanson of Decatur, Georgia; two sons: Mark Borghorst of DeLeon Springs, FL and Dean Borghorst of Minneapolis, MN; two daughters: Sharla Borghorst of Atlanta, GA and Lisa Torguson of Maple Grove, MN; and their spouses and children.
Services will be April 10, 2017 at 2 p.m. at The Lutheran Church of the Messiah in Decatur, Georgia. Burial will be held April 12, 2017 at 2:15 p.m. at Ft. Snelling National Cemetery, Minneapolis, Minnesota.
