Lowell Ament

November 22, 1937 — February 10, 2023

Lowell Ament, beloved husband, brother, and uncle, died suddenly at his home in Atlanta, Georgia, on Friday, Feb. 10, 2023 at the age of 85.

Lowell was born on November 22, 1937 in Illinois, to LeRoy and Dolly McCormack Ament, late of Conyers, Georgia. He spent his early childhood in Elgin, Illinois, outside of Chicago, and later moved with his family to the Atlanta area that became his home for more than 70 years. Lowell graduated from Decatur High School in 1955. He studied Mathematics at Georgia State University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in 1969, followed by a Masters degree.

Lowell worked for many years in the insurance industry, and later as a freelance writer for the Gwinnett Daily Post covering outdoor and travel topics.

Lowell met his wife Susan Sims Ament in 1966 at Emory University's Dooley's Den. He was her devoted best friend and companion for over 55 years. Lowell was an avid outdoorsman and loved biking, canoeing, kayaking, and later sailing. A self-taught canoe builder, he joined Susan in learning to design and build custom kayaks. For many years Susan and Lowell's long-time home in Clarkston, Georgia, became a base for regular paddling expeditions to the rivers of the Southeast. Their sailing trips included ports on all US coasts and several lakes.

In addition to his wife Susan, Lowell is survived by his sister and brother-in-law Arnita and Landis Jones of Washington, DC, brother and sister-in-law Ken and Jayne Sims Hughes of Waleska, GA, nephew Gordon Jones of Austin, TX and wife Laura, niece Jessica Jones Irons of Cranbury, NJ and husband John, nephew Shea Hughes of Waleska, GA and wife Elizabeth, great-nephew Landis Jones, and great-nieces Marra and Alice Irons.

A deeply kind, intelligent and unique man, Lowell was adored by his family and his many dear friends and neighbors, whom he cherished. Friends will remember his quick wit, dry humor, and ceaseless curiosity. Possessed of both an inquiring and acquiring mind, he often impressed others with his ability to observe and recall minute details. He had a genuine interest in his fellow human beings, whom he regarded with an open-minded and easy-going nature, and for which he was rewarded with a wide circle of acquaintances throughout his life. He will be greatly missed.

A celebration of life will be held Saturday, Feb. 18, 3-5pm at A. S. Turner & Sons, Decatur.
