Helen Lewis Mulbarger was born to Ezra and Regis Lewis, April 8, 1927 in Braun County, Georgia. She was raised in Savannah, GA and attended schools there. She entered The Salvation Army Training College 1946 as part of the Warriors Session. She was commissioned on June 2, 1947 as a Lieutenant and appointed as assistant officer in Daytona Beach, FL, In January of 1949 she was appointed to New Orleans, LA as assistant officer and then Young People’s Officer in Jackson, MS.
Helen married David Mulbarger on November 1, 1950 and together they served as corps commanding officers in Lake Charles, LA, Alexandria, LA; Waycross, GA; Savannah, GA; Fairmont, WV; and Arlington, VA.
Following those appointments, they then began years of service in The Salvation Army’s Adult Rehabilitation program. These appointments were in Tulsa, OK; Tampa, FL and Miami, FL. They were named the Command Heads of the Adult Rehabilitation Command in Atlanta, Georgia. In 1978 Helen was appointed as the director of Overseas Child Sponsorship Bureau in 1986; Director of Special Services Director of the Men’s Social Service Department in July 1987. As their final appointment, they were appointed to the Ft. Lauderdale, FL as administrators of that Rehabilitation Command in April of 1991; and then appointed to Atlanta, GA THQ Special Work, ARC Command until their retirement on October 31, 1993 with over 46 years of active service as Salvation Army officers.
Helen is survived by her husband, Lt. Colonel David Mulbarger; daughter Ethel Regis Mulbarger, and son David William (Julie Ditmer) Mulbarger as well as grandchildren; Catherine Regis Mulbarger (Jason) White, Ross David Mulbarger, Camryn Elizabeth Mulbarger and son-in-law George W. Holston, III. She also has one great-grandson, Morrison Reed White. She is pre-deceased by a daughter, Mrs. Lynn (George) Holston and brother Harold Lewis.
