Retired Lt. Col John H. Dieterle, age 85, died on May 5, 2015 in West Jordan, UT .

He was born August 6, 1929 in Rexburg, Idaho, to Joseph Hyrum Dieterle and Nora Lavern Rudd. He grew up on a farm in the foothills of the Sawtooth Mountains about nine miles northeast of Carey, Idaho, which is a small town 40 miles south of Sun Valley and 15 miles west of the Craters of the Moon National Monument. He joined the Army at age 18, and retired twenty-five years later as a Lieutenant Colonel. He served first in the infantry, and after Officer Candidate School, was commissioned in the Chemical Corps. He received the Army Commendation Medal twice, and the Joint Service Commendation Medal for service in the U.S. Embassy in Thailand during the Viet Nam War. During this time he was stationed at Fort Ord, California; Fort Bragg, North Carolina; Fort Rucker, Alabama; Fort McClellan, Alabama; Chicago, Illinois; West Point, New York; Fort Hood, Texas; Fort Knox, Kentucky; Mannheim, Germany; Aschaffenberg, Germany; Frankfurt Germany; Wiesbaden, Germany; Grafenwoehr, Germany; and the U.S. Embassy in Bangkok, Thailand. He attended the United States Military Academy in West Point, New York. He received a BGS from the University of Omaha, Omaha, Nebraska, in 1962; an MBA in Finance from Jacksonville State University, Jacksonville, Alabama, in 1974; and did post-graduate work at Georgia State University in Organizational Development. He taught Economics and other business courses at DeKalb College for twelve years (1975-1987). In September 1992, he retired from Georgia State University, after serving sixteen years as Business Manager for the School of Nursing. After his retirement from the University System of Georgia he worked an additional three years as an Ordinance Worker in the Atlanta Temple. He had been an Ordinance Worker at the temple, during the first two years it was open, while working at Georgia State University – making a total of five years at the temple.

He was born a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and has been very active throughout his life. His church positions included Teacher's Quorum President; Financial Clerk; Counselor in Young Men's Presidency; Elder's Quorum President; Ward Clerk; First Counselor in Bishopric; First Counselor in the Presidency of the Thailand District; High Councilor; Branch President; First Counselor in Branch Presidency; Servicemen's Group Leader; Presiding Bishop's Agent for the Atlanta, Georgia Region. He and his wife served two Family History missions. They served their first mission as the Directors of the New York City Family History Center in Manhattan, New York at the Lincoln Center across from the Juliard School of Music. After they moved to Utah, they then served as missionaries at the Family History Library in Salt Lake City. He and his wife have five children, who have served missions in Portland, Oregon; Frankfurt, Germany; Asuncion, Paraguay; and Stockholm, Sweden. His oldest, a son, died at age 26 from complications of juvenile diabetes which was diagnosed when he was 10 years old.

He is survived by his children: Mary Lorraine Dieterle, Lehi; Claire Elizabeth Dieterle, Taylorsville; Benjamin Christian Dieterle, Salt Lake City; Charlotte Dieterle Hatch, West Jordan; son-in-law, William Victor Hatch; three grandchildren: Kevin William Hatch (serving an LDS mission in Colombia Bogota South Mission), Elizabeth McKenzie Hatch, Caroline Michelle Hatch; sister: Lois Dieterle Harry, Idaho Falls, Idaho. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Diane Shutley Dieterle; his firstborn, John H. Dieterle, Jr., and his sister Margaret Dieterle Peterson.

The family will receive visitors Saturday, May 9, 2015 from 4:30pm – 6:00 p.m. at the Cobble Creek 2nd Ward, 8150 S. Grizzly Way (5410 W.), West Jordan, UT. Interment will be in the family plot in the Decatur Cemetery, Decatur, Georgia. Military Funeral Honors by the US Army Military Guard.
