Lucy Bridges Altizer

January 4, 1938 — April 15, 2008

Lucy Jane Bridges Altizer, 70, died peacefully at her home on April 15, 2008 after gracefully and courageously accepting her final illness.



Born in Millen to Dr. Glenn J. Bridges, Sr. and Margaret Raymond Bridges, she grew up in Atlanta.  She attended Washington Seminary, the Westminster Schools, Henry Grady High School, and the University of Georgia.  She made her debut with the Atlanta Debutante Club.  She was a champion swimmer, participating for several years in the Havalanta Games that alternated between Atlanta and Havana, Cuba.  She was also a star basketball player, playing semi-pro at one time, and an outstanding tennis player and equestrian.  



Trained as an orthoptist, she opened and operated the East Tennessee Orthoptic Clinic sponsored by the Lion's Club of Knoxville, where she lived for several years.  She was a district manager for World Book Encyclopedia, worked as an ophthalmic technician at Emory Clinic, and in later years, she enjoyed selling real estate in Druid Hills.  She was passionate about education, gardening, Southern cooking and Doberman Pinchers.  



She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Douglas L. Altizer and Gail L. Rothman of Decatur; her grandchildren Haegan, Baylen and Hazel Altizer of Decatur; her brothers Glenn J. Bridges, Jr. of Dublin, Chandler R. Bridges of Marietta, and Andrew P. Bridges of Woodside, California; and six nieces and nephews.



Visitation will be at A.S. Turner and Sons, Decatur from 6 pm until 8 pm on Friday, April 18, 2008.   A private graveside ceremony will take place at a later date at Magnolia Cemetery in Augusta.
