Lucy Julia Harris

Lucy Julia Mele Harris went to join Stanley her husband, Susan her oldest daughter, Farrah her former canine roommate and others in her family on 7/1/2017, dying peacefully in her sleep at the age of 91 years, 6 months and 18 days. She leaves behind her daughter Linda, her son and daughter-in-law Robert and Kristen, her son-in-law John, her granddaughters Angela and Jill and her nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Lucy was born into a large extended Italian family in Troy, NY in 1925. During the Depression, she, her mother, father, two sisters and brother lived in Brooklyn for several years before moving back to Troy where she graduated high school (a stellar student) and went to work as a secretary for the Aniline Corporation. A quiet girl, Lucy was also a looker and finally found her life partner in Stanley Harris, who also worked at the Aniline. She and Stanley were married 58 years until his death in 2010. Lucy had a highly successful career as a stay-at-home mom, raising 3 children and living in Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Buffalo, NY, each move due to Stanley’s promotions. Lucy and Stanley retired to Atlanta in 1986 to be near their daughters. In retirement, Lucy and Stanley traveled the US, visiting many of the National Parks, and then overseas to France and Italy. Lucy loved word games, played competitive trivia at times, assisted Linda in many of her household and yard projects, had a great sense of humor and was a gold medal worrier. Lucy could worry with the best – but it was always about others and never about herself. Lucy loved and was loved. She will be greatly missed. But, as with any great mother, she will surely be overseeing things from above.
A memorial Mass will be held at St. Thomas More Catholic Church in Decatur, GA at 11:30 am on Friday, August 11th. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to St. Vincent de Paul of Georgia, 2050-C Chamblee Tucker Road, Atlanta, GA 30341.
