Lueben Lynley Davis, Sr.

Lueben Lynley Davis Sr. - better known as “JJ”, or “Mr. Davis” - transitioned on Sunday 10th July, 2022, in Decatur, GA. Lueben was preceded in death by his father, David Alfred Davis, sister, Eleanor Plaskett, sister, Fernie Davis, mother, Vivian Sprauve, brother, Mitchlyn Davis, and brother, Merrill Davis. Left to mourn his passing and carryon his legacy are his wife, Christine Garrett Davis, his sons Michael Davis, Sr., Lueben Davis, Jr., and DeEstes Carter; grandsons DeQuan Davis and Michael Davis Jr.; his brothers - Oscar Jacobs, Clarence Davis(MD), Edward Davis(MD), and Haldayne Sprauve; his sisters - Muriel Manchester (TX), Yvonne Davis (NY),Annette Percival, Daphne O’Neal, and Felecita Sprauve (GA); three sisters-in-law; one brother-in-law forty-five nieces and nephews, several aunts, uncles and cousins; special friends - Cecil Jennings, Arthur Spear Edwards, Alcede Richards and Sylvester Lake.

Lueben Lynley Davis Sr. was born on November 3, 1959, on St. Thomas, United States Virgin Islands to David Davis (Uncle D) and Vivian T. Sprauve. He was a fun-loving child that attended Dober Elementary School, Wayne Aspinall Junior High School, and Charlotte Amalie High School (CAHS). At school, he was an average student with an outstanding personality. He was a student athlete who participated in football and wrestling. Lueben was named co-captain of the football team during his senior year. He received a football scholarship to attend Carthage College in Kenosha, Wisconsin, with other CAHS students. There he played football for two years. In 1981, he received his Bachelor of Arts degree in History. He returned to St. Thomas and began his career in education as a history teacher at Bertha C. Boschulte (BCB) Middle School. Lueben, “JJ”, or “Mr. Davis” as he was affectionately called by most of his friends, was a guiding force in the classroom as a teacher. He continued his education but obtaining his Master’s in Education Administration from University of the Virgin Islands (UVI) in 2005. He was subsequently selected to be an Assistant Principal at Ivanna Eudora Kean High School (IEKHS). He maintained his administrative position until his retirement in 2011. He was known for this statement: “I have never met a parent, student, teacher, principal or person in general that I couldn’t get along with. So just smile.”

Lueben continued his contribution to the youth of the US Virgin Islands through mentorship programs, by becoming an assistant coach for the CAHS football team, working as Coordinator for the VI Waste Management Authority (VIWMA) youth environmental summer program known as Clean and Preen. He left a greater mark on his colleagues and the youth who he mentored as an educator, coach, and administrator.

After his retirement from the Department of Education, Lueben then dedicated himself fulltime to his landscaping business - D & L Beautiful Lawns. He loved to be outdoors working on pruning trees, maintaining lawns, and planting any type of decorative, herbal, or food-producing plants. He established a loyal following for his business until illness dictated that he discontinue his services.

Lueben was a member of the St. Thomas Carnival Committee, and chaired the Panorama (Steelpan) Sub-Committee for ten years. On occasions he was taped to be a Food Fair judge, and he further showed his joy of carnival by participating in the annual Adults Parade as a member of the Zulu Warriors floupe until 2019.

In June of 2014, Lueben was selected as one of several honorees for the Stepping Up to the Role of Fatherhood Award by the Harvesting Souls for God’s Kingdom Ministries, Inc. He was extremely proud to receive this award as it further emphasized the importance he placed on being a good mentor for his sons, nephews, cousins, and students.

Lueben was a beloved husband, father, brother, cousin, and uncle to his family members.

Lueben’s magnetic personality attracted people to him, all with whom he remained friends until he left this earthly life.
